Coffee With D Review: Sunil Grover’s film has an interesting plot but suffers from bad performances
Coffee With D could have been much better but you will enjoy it if you're a Sunil Grover fan
Honestly, I went to watch the movie expecting to kill myself by the end of it. But it wasn’t as bad as I expected it to be. I had high hopes from Sunil Grover and he lived up to it for most part of the film. Zakir Hussain delivered a mind-blowing performance as D, who was one of the most-feared don in our country and who has settled in Karachi. I’m sure you’ve guessed which don he has played in the film by now. Sunil Grover plays the role of a journalist, Arnab Goswami to be precise, but with a twist. Arnab Gosh, as he is called in the film, has a pregnant wife at home, played by Anjana Sukhani, who is also a crime reporter and addicted to watching Crime Patrol.
Dipannita Sharma is an entertainment journalist, Neha, who wants to sleep with Arnab and drops in subtle hints but he is a happily married guy. She is also one of the best news writer in the country. The plot of the movie revolves around Arnab, who is removed from his prime time slot and shifted to doing a cookery show because of the bad TRPs. The one thing that can save Arnab’s job is to get an interview with D who has never given any interviews to the media before. Hell breaks loose when Arnab sets out with Neha and two crew members to get the interview and get out of the place alive. What’s Hot
Sunil Grover’s portrayal as Arnab Goswami will make sure you laugh your heads off. Rajesh Sharma, who plays the Chief Editor of the news channel, also delivers a funny and fairly decent performance. One thing that I really liked was that every time Sunil took a cigarette out in the film, there was a Smoking Kills message in the bottom right of the screen, which made him throw the cigarette rather than lighting it. Zakir Hussain’s performance stood out in the film. The film is entertaining in the first half as Arnab sets out to publishing a lot of false news about D to get him to agree for interview. It will actually remind you of the time Arnab Goswani had called Dawood’s landline in Karachi and claimed to speak to his wife. Remember? It was airing on the channel for a really long time.
What’s Not
Sunil Grover seemed awkward and blank in a few romantic scenes. Since we are used to seeing him be funny most of the times, it is kind of unsettling to see him be serious or romantic, for that matter. The second half of the film kept dragging on and the makers tried to make it look patriotic but it lacked the emotions. The writing could have been much better. Zakir Hussain was the only actor holding the fort and keeping us hooked to the screen. The plot was quite interesting but the performances didn’t match up to it. There is a scene where Parul (Anjana Sukhani) calls Arnab to remind him of the oath that they took as journalists. A strong scene performed poorly, it lacked the impact that it could have created.
Verdict
You can watch it if you are looking to enjoy a light movie. Even if you skip it, you are not missing out on anything.
